Otoplasty

Otoplasty is also known as ear plastic surgery or ear reshaping surgery. Prominent ears often draw unwanted attention and disturb the visual balance of a person's appearance. Dr. Lee has refined the surgical technique in reshaping prominent ears with minimal post-operative discomfort and problem. The incision is hidden without obvious scar behind the ears. Patients, children and adults, often can return to school or work within one week and to routine moderate exercise within 3 weeks. Most children and teenagers undergo this procedure during the summer to minimize absence from school. The results of ear reshaping surgery are permanent. Every prominent ear is different. Often the two ears for one patient are different. The surgery for every ear is customized to obtain the best results to fit the face and to restore facial harmony.

Procedure

The procedure is a same day procedure and performed under "twilight anesthesia". An intravenous catheter is inserted and medications are administered to achieve the proper level of anesthesia. It is safe and has been performed routinely without difficulty.

Recovery

The recovery period is fairly uneventful. A fluffy dressing is wrapped around the area immediately after the surgery. The dressing will be removed the following day. Swelling and discoloration of the ears is common after surgery, and will subside in about a week to 10 days.
